The Cypriot Fiddler

45

The Cypriot Fiddler uses ethnomusicology, oral and cultural history, and visual anthropology, in order to collect and present the life stories of some of the last surviving traditional musicians of Cyprus, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. It’s made up of a documentary, a book, and this website.

The Cypriot Fiddler began its life as a research project based at the Oxford Centre for Life Writing, Wolfson College, between 2012 and 2019, led by Dr Nicoletta Demetriou, an ethnomusicologist and life writing scholar.

Initial research for the project was made possible through a British Academy/Leverhulme Trust Small Research Grant (2013). In 2016, The Cypriot Fiddler was chosen by the British Academy as a case study, and featured on its blog.

The filming and original edits for the documentary were made possible through an online crowdsourcing campaign on Kickstarter (2015).

Additional edits were made possible through a grant from the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, and Youth of the Republic of Cyprus (2020).
